Yonex Super Grap

Super Grap is Yonex’s best-selling overgrip, which has sold enough grips to wrap around the world five times. First launched in 1987, Yonex Super Grap has been a go-to choice for professionals for 26 years. This overgrip is fantastic and enhances playability by absorbing shock and moisture to give outstanding levels of feel and control. Let’s see how it fairs against its competitor, the Wilson Overgrip.

Now enter the competitor, the Wilson Overgrip, a grip for those fashionistas who don’t want to break the bank. A soft overgrip, more often used in tennis, the Wilson Overgrip is perfectly well placed to also be used in other racket sports such as badminton. Sporting durable material for long-lasting, consistent performance with an absolute abundance of colors and styles, let’s see how it compares to badminton’s best.

We performed several tests and rated each grip we tested according to 7 different categories.  If you want to see exactly how we tested them, check out our article Best Badminton Grips.

Tackiness

Yonex Super Grap

  • 9/10
  • EXTREMELY TACKY
  • PROS CHOICE

The tackiness of the Yonex Super Grap is brilliant. We found that it performed excellent in our tackiness test, allowing for a firm grip on the racket, without any movement. It is no wonder that top players such as Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Ardianto use Yonex Super Grap for their rackets.

  • 5/10
  • NOT TACKY
  • SMOOTH FEEL

The Wilson Overgrip isn’t as tacky as we would have expected this from an overgrip. Unfortunately, we found that the grip was quite slippy, affecting powerful shots as it lacks the grip for a secure hold and moves in your hand. Round 1 to the home team.

Comfort

Yonex Super Grap

  • 8/10
  • GOOD PADDING
  • CUSHIONED FEEL
  • SHOCK ABSORBING

The Yonex Super Grap is not only tacky but also extremely comfortable to hold. With amazing padding and cushioning for an overgrip, you can definitely use this overgrip as a stand-alone grip, which is the way I like to use Yonex Super Grap. Yonex Super Grap gives excellent levels of comfort, control, and shock absorption, perfect for every aspect of your game.

Wilson Overgrip Tape

  • 6/10
  • NICE FEEL
  • THIN OVERGRIP
  • SHOULDN’T USE ALONE

The Wilson Overgrip has a nice feel and texture to it. We found that the Wilson Overgrip is relatively thin meaning that there isn’t much padding on the grip which can be beneficial for those players whose style favors touch and deception. But, unlike the Super Grap, we wouldn’t advise using it as a stand-alone grip. The best way is to use the grip in combination with a replacement grip, a second overgrip, or apply it over the top of your existing base grip.

Durability

Yonex Super Grap

  • 8/10
  • DURABLE
  • NO GRIP MOVEMENT
  • TACKY EVEN AFTER EXTENDED USE

The durable nature of the Yonex Super Grap is very welcome. Standing up well to both our at-home durability test and my continued use of the grip, I am happy to say that the grip maintains good tackiness with minimal scuffs and abrasions even after weeks of heavy use. Having to change your grip sparingly is a key consideration when choosing a grip, and Yonex Super Grap definitely ticks this box.

  • 7/10
  • DURABLE
  • WHITE MARKED EASILY

Much like the Super Grap, the Wilson Overgrip demonstrated good durability, and the quality and reliability of the Wilson Brand is clear to see. However, we noticed that the white grip that we used got marked easily, just from being carried in my badminton bag before the grip even made it onto the court.

Style

Yonex Super Grap

  • 7/10
  • LOTS OF COLORS
  • RANGE OF 11 COLOURS
  • VARIED ACCESS TO FULL RANGE

Not only does the Yonex Super Grap perform well on the court, but also allows you to express yourself with an expansive range of 11 different colors. You can simultaneously satisfy the athlete and fashionista within you with this grip. However, we found that color availability may vary from country to country, as we were unable to find every color available to purchase.

Wilson Overgrip Tape

  • 10/10
  • LOTS OF COLORS AND PATTERNS
  • MINION COLLAB AVAILABLE
  • PERFECT FOR FASHIONISTAS

This is the first round that clearly goes to the Wilson Overgrip. Its standout feature, the Wilson Overgrip’s style variety makes it a go-to choice for players who want to match their grip to their racket. With numerous colors and even a Minions collaboration grip, Wilson caters to fashion-forward badminton enthusiasts.

Absorbency

Yonex Super Grap

  • 9/10
  • EXCELLENT ABSORBENCY
  • TACKY EVEN WHEN WET
  • GREAT FOR SWEATY HANDS

In our tests, we found that the Yonex Super Grap performed brilliantly during the absorbency test. Only bested by the towel grips that are designed with absorbancy in mind, the Yonex Super Grap runs them extremely close and can definitely be used by those with sweaty hands. We found that the tackiness of the grip was not lost when we wet our hand, with the grip removing the water rapidly for a secure and not slippy grip.

Wilson Overgrip Tape

  • 4/10
  • POOR ABSORBENCY
  • SLIPPY WHEN WET

After the highs of the last round, disappointingly the Wilson Overgrip slips further behind the Yonex Super Grap when comparing absorbency. Surprisingly, we found that the Wilson Overgrip performed poorly on the absorbency test. We found that it became very slippy when wet, so, unlike the Super Grap, we would not advise the Wilson Overgrip for players with sweaty hands.

Ease of Regrip

Yonex Super Grap

  • 7/10
  • NO ADHESIVE BACKING
  • INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED
  • SPEED – 1 MIN 32 SEC

Regripping the Yonex Super Grap was an easy process, featuring a pre-cut start position and finishing tape. Instructions are provided and the end of the grip is pre-cut but the grip is often longer than necessary and needs trimming down which can be tricky for beginners. In the speed test, it wasn’t particularly fast, coming in a joint 6th out of the 9 with its sibling, Yonex Hi-Soft Grap, the Yonex Super Grap took 1 minute and 32 seconds to change.

Wilson Overgrip Tape

  • 7/10
  • SECOND SLOWEST IN SPEED TEST
  • INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED
  • SPEED – 1 MIN 38 SEC

Regripping the Wilson Overgrip is a straightforward process, featuring both a pre-cut start position and finishing tape. Although it ranks second slowest in the speed test (though not by much), and only 6 seconds slower than its rival, the grip’s ease of application compensates for the slight delay. There isn’t anything to split the two grips when it comes to the regripping process.

Price

Yonex Super Grap

  • 9/10
  • EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY
  • BEST IN CLASS
  • BULK BUY AVAILABLE

When it comes to the price and its value for money, the Yonex Super Grap easily tops the pile! We found that you could purchase it from £2.99 to as low as £1.50 when bought in bulk, which for what you get, is absolutely incredible. The only minor downside is that the minimum quantity that you can buy is 3 grips. But still not the worst thing in the world!

Wilson Overgrip Tape

  • 7/10
  • CHEAPEST
  • CHEAP TO TEST
  • BULK BUY AVAILABLE

The Wilson Overgrip is incredibly good value and the cheapest grip we have tested. Of course, it varies depending on the color and pattern you choose and whether you buy it in bulk, but we saw prices as cheap as 80p per grip when bought in bulk! For 80p you can get the prestige of the Wilson brand without breaking the bank.

The Winner

Yonex Super Grap

Though the Wilson Overgrip holds its own in many of the categories we have tested, even smashing it in Style, unfortunately, it can’t quite live with the super-star quality of the Yonex Super Grap.

In this face-off, we have to give the win to the home competitor, the Yonex Super Grap. It consistently beats the Wilson Overgrip in all of the performance aspects of the grip, proving why it is the go-to choice for so many professional badminton players.
