Yonex Super Grap

Super Grap is Yonex’s best-selling overgrip, which has sold enough grips to wrap around the world five times. First launched in 1987, Yonex Super Grap has been a go-to choice for professionals for over 26 years. This overgrip is fantastic and enhances playability by absorbing shock and moisture to give outstanding levels of feel and control. Let’s see how it fairs against its competitor and the new kid on the block, the Raquex Evolve Overgrip.

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

The Evolve Overgrip by the Raquex company, founded in the UK in 2019, is “Amazon’s Choice” with over a hundred 5-star reviews. In our review of the Raquex Evolve Overgrip, we found that it is a great starting point for beginners but can it live with the heavyweights of the badminton world, let find out.

We performed several tests and rated each grip we tested according to 7 different categories.  If you want to see exactly how we tested them, check out our article Best Badminton Grips.

Tackiness

Yonex Super Grap

  • 9/10
  • EXTREMELY TACKY
  • PROS CHOICE

The tackiness of the Yonex Super Grap is brilliant. We found that it performed excellent in our tackiness test, allowing for a firm grip on the racket, without any movement. It is no wonder that top players such as Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Ardianto use Yonex Super Grap for their rackets.

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

  • 7/10
  • SLIGHTLY TACKY
  • SOFT FEEL

The Raquex Evolve Overgrip has a slightly tacky finish with a soft feel. It is good enough that it makes an amazing difference when you go from a worn-out grip to a new grip. However, if you require ultimate tackiness and precision then maybe the Raquex Evolve Overgrip isn’t for you, as we found that it doesn’t compare to the Yonex Super Grap.

Comfort

Yonex Super Grap

  • 8/10
  • GOOD PADDING
  • CUSHIONED FEEL
  • SHOCK ABSORBING

The Yonex Super Grap is not only tacky but also extremely comfortable to hold. With amazing padding and cushioning for an overgrip, you can definitely use this overgrip as a stand-alone grip, which is the way I like to use Yonex Super Grap. Yonex Super Grap gives excellent levels of comfort, control, and shock absorption, perfect for every aspect of your game.

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

  • 6/10
  • NICE TEXTURE
  • THIN FEEL
  • SHOULDN’T USE ALONE

We found that the Raquex Evolve Overgrip is relatively thin meaning that there isn’t much padding on the grip, not unsurprising as it is an overgrip. We found that due to the thinness of the grip it shouldn’t be used as a solo grip, unlike the Super Grap. It is best used in combination with a replacement grip, a second overgrip, or applied over the top of your existing base grip.

Durability

Yonex Super Grap

  • 8/10
  • DURABLE
  • NO GRIP MOVEMENT
  • TACKY EVEN AFTER EXTENDED USE

The durable nature of the Yonex Super Grap is very welcome. Standing up well to both our at-home durability test and my continued use of the grip, I am happy to say that the grip maintains good tackiness with minimal scuffs and abrasions even after weeks of heavy use. Having to change your grip sparingly is a key consideration when choosing a grip, and Yonex Super Grap definitely ticks this box.

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

  • 6/10
  • LOSS OF TACKINESS
  • DURABLE-ISH
  • WEAR AFTER ONE GAME

The company claims a high level of durability thanks to its premium material construction but we found that the durability was middle of the road. We found that even after just one game, we could see wear on the handle at the base.

Style

Yonex Super Grap

  • 7/10
  • LOTS OF COLORS
  • RANGE OF 11 COLOURS
  • VARIED ACCESS TO FULL RANGE

Not only does the Yonex Super Grap perform well on the court, but it also allows you to express yourself with an expansive range of 11 different colors. You can simultaneously satisfy the athlete and fashionista within you with this grip. However, we found that color availability may vary from country to country, as we were unable to find every color available to purchase.

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

  • 7/10
  • 5 DIFFERENT COLORS
  • DIFFERENT PATTERNS
  • PERFECT FOR FASHIONISTAS

Style is where the Raquex Overgrip goes toe-to-toe with the Super Grap. Supplied as a pack of 5, Raquex Evolve Overgrip comes in blue, red, yellow, orange, and black. In addition to colors, you can also get them in various patterns such as stripes and camo something the Super Grap doesn’t have. These options make the Raquex Evolve Overgrip highly ranked for style.

Absorbency

Yonex Super Grap

  • 9/10
  • EXCELLENT ABSORBENCY
  • TACKY EVEN WHEN WET
  • GREAT FOR SWEATY HANDS

In our tests, we found that the Yonex Super Grap performed brilliantly during the absorbency test. Only bested by the towel grips that are designed with absorbancy in mind, the Yonex Super Grap runs them extremely close and can definitely be used by those with sweaty hands. We found that the tackiness of the grip was not lost when we wet our hand, with the grip removing the water rapidly for a secure and not slippy grip.

Testing the absorbency of the Yonex Super Grap grip

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

  • 6/10
  • MINIMAL ABSORBANCY
  • SLIPPY WHEN WET

Unlike the Super Grap, we felt that the absorbancy of the Evolve overgrip wasn’t fantastic. The grip was slippy after wetting the hand, unlike grips which have good absorbency, which may be due to the thinness of the grip tape. Although Raquex claims to have good absorbency properties due to its “Unique arrow design to direct moisture away from the surface of the grip”, this is not what we found.

Ease of Regrip

Yonex Super Grap

  • 7/10
  • NO ADHESIVE BACKING
  • INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED
  • SPEED – 1 MIN 32 SEC

Regripping the Yonex Super Grap was an easy process, featuring a pre-cut start position and finishing tape. Instructions are provided and the end of the grip is pre-cut but the grip is often longer than necessary and needs trimming down which can be tricky for beginners. In the speed test, it wasn’t particularly fast, coming in a joint 6th out of the 9 with its sibling, Yonex Hi-Soft Grap, the Yonex Super Grap took 1 minute and 32 seconds to change.

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

  • 7/10
  • OK TO REGRIP
  • INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED
  • SPEED – 2 MIN 17 SEC

We found that the Raquex Evolve Overgrip was OK to regrip. We were provided with instructions, a pre-cut, self-adhesive, starting end, and finishing tape to secure the top end. It also has an online instructional video to help you re-grip your racket. However, we found it the fiddliest grip to regrip. As a result, it was the slowest grip out of all the grips to regrip in our speed trial.

Price

Yonex Super Grap

  • 9/10
  • EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY
  • BEST IN CLASS
  • BULK BUY AVAILABLE

When it comes to the price and its value for money, the Yonex Super Grap easily tops the pile! We found that you could purchase it from £2.99 to as low as £1.50 when bought in bulk, which for what you get, is absolutely incredible. The only minor downside is that the minimum quantity that you can buy is 3 grips. But still not the worst thing in the world!

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

  • 7/10
  • GOOD VALUE FOR BEGINNERS
  • PRICE RANGES
  • PAY MORE FOR STYLE

One of the standout features of the Raquex Evolve Overgrip is its affordability. The price ranges from £2.30 – £3.00 depending on the number of grips bought. It offers good value for players who want to maintain a reliable grip without breaking the bank, with enough colors to keep your racket feeling new. While it may not last as long as the Super Grap, it provides an effective and budget-friendly solution for players of all levels.

Summary

Yonex Super Grap

The Yonex Super Grap, a 26-year veteran in the field, has earned its spot as a top choice among players. Renowned for its exceptional tackiness, it ensures precise racket control, appealing to players across all skill levels. Its high comfort levels and impressive shock absorption elevate gameplay and provide lasting comfort during extended play. The grip boasts impressive durability and reliability even after extensive use, withstanding wear while maintaining its qualities. With commendable absorbency, especially in wet conditions, it caters well to players with sweaty hands. Despite lacking adhesive backing, its straightforward regripping process might require a learning curve for beginners. In summary, the Yonex Super Grap Overgrip stands out for its exceptional tackiness, comfort, durability, and absorbency, making it a top choice for players seeking superior performance and reliability on the court.

Raquex Evolve Overgrip

The Raquex Evolve Overgrip is a cost-effective solution for beginners seeking to move on from their racket’s starter grip. Its affordability makes it a practical choice for those looking to enhance their performance on the court without a significant investment. Style-conscious players will love the extensive color and pattern choices available, allowing you to make your racket more personal to you. However, we couldn’t ignore its limitations in more important and functional aspects of a grip compared to the Yonex Super Grap. Compared to the Super Grap, the grip wasn’t particularly tacky, a crucial factor for making precise shots in badminton. It also wasn’t as comfortable either, feeling thin, and therefore needing either a replacement grip or a second overgrip underneath to increase padding. The durability and absorbency were also lacking compared to the Super Grap. In summary, the Raquex Evolve Overgrip is a cost-effective solution for beginners but is lacking in key aspects and is not a grip for established players looking to bring their game up a level.

The Winner

Yonex Super Grap

For the new kid on the block, the Raquex Evolve definitely holds its own in many of the categories we have tested, but unfortunately, it can’t quite live with the super-star quality of the Yonex Super Grap.

In this match between the veteran and the newcomer, the Yonex Super Grap has to take the win. The Raquex Overgrip is consistently second best, not once managing to best the Yonex Super Grap in any category, proving why it is the go-to choice for so many professional badminton players.
