I recently got my hands on the Yonex Power Cushion Cascade Drive 2 Badminton Shoes in Clear Blue, and have spent some time putting them through their paces. I’m excited to share my thoughts with you. In this review, I’ll cover everything from design and construction to performance and comfort, helping you decide if these shoes are any good. I found these to be a pretty solid choice overall. Here’s my take on them:
First Impressions & Design
Right out of the box, the Clear Blue color really caught my eye. These shoes have a fresh, modern look that makes you feel like you’re stepping onto the court with style. The upper is made of synthetic materials combined with mesh panels, so not only do they look cool, but they also keep your feet well-ventilated. Though, if I am honest, I am not a fan of the high-backed heel.
I appreciated the snug yet supportive fit. The construction feels robust, and there are just enough reinforcements in the right places to give your feet a sense of stability.
Comfort & Performance
Cushioning That Really Works
One of the standout features for me is the Power Cushion technology. It’s like the shoes have a little secret: they absorb the shock when you land and then help push you off for that next quick step. I noticed this right away during fast-paced drills and when jumping for smashes, it really cuts down on the wear and tear on your feet.
Yonex even states that “Even a raw egg rebounds without cracking”, though I can’t say I tested this. Apparently, when dropped from 7 meters above a Power Cushion sheet, an egg can bounce back 4 meters without damage.
Agility and Stability
I love how these shoes support quick, lateral movements. Whether I’m lunging for a drop shot or just moving around the court, the enhanced lateral support gives me the confidence to make those quick moves without feeling wobbly. I was also happy with the grip on the outsole too; I rarely feel like I’m slipping, even on quick direction changes.
Durability
I appreciate the overall build quality, these shoes feel durable enough to withstand regular use on the court without feeling like they’re falling apart after a few matches.
Fit and Sizing
One word: snug. They definitely have a secure fit, which is great for support, but if you have wider feet or prefer a bit more room, I’d suggest considering a half-size up. I found that they felt perfect after a short break-in period, once my feet got used to them. I am UK size 12, and I bought a UK 12.5.
Real World Testing
After 1 Month of Use
Durability: After using the shoes for 1 month (8 Training sessions and 4 Matches), I still see no visible wear, which is great.
Grip: I am happy to report that the grip on the shoes is great too. I played in one hall that was particularly slippy, but the shoes held up very well, and I didn’t need to use a towel at the side of the court to wipe my shoes on, unlike the other players.
Comfort: I have had no problems with the cushioning and the comfort of the shoes. I have not come away with painful feet, which can happen if the shoes aren’t quite right.
After 3 Months of Use
Durability: After using the shoes for 3 months, I still see no visible wear, which is great.
Grip: I still have had no problems with the shoes grip and there also is no visible wear.
Comfort: The shoes are comfortable enough, with no painful feet at all. I have had a few times where my foot has slipped inside the shoes, but no massive issues to report. I also used them with a Fitomo ankle support, and there was enough room within the shoes and it was not uncomfortable.
Below is an image of the shoes after 3 months of use.
After 6 Months of Use
Durability: After using the shoes for 6 months, I still see no visible wear, which I think is amazing considering the amount of use. I am very happy! The usual places of wear and tear are still almost as good as new.
Grip: I still have had no problems with the shoes grip, and there is also no visible wear.
Comfort: I am still really happy with the comfort of the shoes. I still don’t have any issues when I finish a good training session. The padding is also holding up well too.
Overall, I am very happy with the wear and tear. As far as Yonex shoes go, I have been very pleased with their durability. I would definitely give the shoes a 10/10 for durability. I would definitely recommend!
Key Technologies & Features (The Jargon)
Power Cushion Technology
Yonex’s signature Power Cushion technology remains at the heart of these shoes. This system is designed to absorb shock upon landing and quickly reverse the energy during push-off, providing enhanced cushioning and rebound. This translates to smoother, more explosive movements during intense rallies, just ask those eggs!
Enhanced Lateral Support
The Cascade Drive 2 has been updated to improve lateral stability. Whether you’re lunging for a drop shot or rapidly changing direction, the shoe’s structure supports your foot throughout the movement. This is crucial for badminton players, where quick, agile movements can be the difference between winning and losing a point.
Traction & Sole Design
The outsole features a dynamic Radial Blade Sole pattern engineered for multi-directional grip. This helps ensure that you remain firmly planted on the court during fast-paced shifts, while the lightweight construction aids in preserving overall agility.
Breathability & Comfort
Thanks to the inclusion of the “Double Raschel Mesh” panels, the shoe provides excellent ventilation (eight times more air exchange than ordinary mesh fabric) keeping your feet cool and dry during long sessions. The interior lining and padded collar further contribute to a snug and comfortable feel, minimizing distractions during play.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Design: The Clear Blue colorway and modern construction make these shoes stand out.
- Excellent Shock Absorption: Power Cushion technology provides great comfort and energy return.
- Reliable Traction: The dynamic Radial Blade Sole pattern offers superb grip on the court.
- Good Ventilation: Double Raschel Mesh panels ensure your feet stay cool during extended play.
Cons
- Sizing Considerations: Some players might find the fit a bit snug; trying a half-size up may be beneficial.
- Break-In Period: As with many performance shoes, there might be a brief break-in period before the shoe reaches its optimal comfort level.
- Personal Preference: I am personally not a fan of the pointed high back heel look. But that is a personal preference.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the Yonex Power Cushion Cascade Drive 2 in has been a great addition to my badminton gear. They’re durable, comfortable, and are well-suited for competitive players and enthusiasts alike. If you’re looking for a pair of shoes that combine modern looks with solid performance and a bit of that extra support for those explosive moves, I’d definitely recommend giving these a try.
