Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

Dunlop’s PU Replacement grip Viper Dry is a no-nonsense grip for those players who value performance over style. The Dunlop Viper Dry is brilliant when considering the performance aspects of a grip, with amazing tackiness, incredible comfort, and excellent absorbency. But let’s see how it compares to the go-to badminton brand, Yonex’s Hi-Soft Grip.

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

The Yonex’s PU Replacement grip Hi-Soft Grap is designed with ultimate comfort in mind but still sports a non-slip performance and great absorbency. The Yonex Hi-Soft grip is a perfect marriage between comfort and performance, ranking highly in tackiness and comfort. It proves that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for performance, so let’s have our cake and eat it too.

We performed several tests and rated each grip we tested according to 7 different categories.  If you want to see exactly how we tested them, check out our article Best Badminton Grips.

Tackiness

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

  • 10/10
  • EXTREMELY TACKY
  • BEST IN CLASS

The Tackiness of the Viper Dry grip is second to none, doesn’t matter who the competitor is. When holding the grip it feels like it is sticking to your hand. With such tackiness, there is no way this grip is moving around in your hand during any rally or powerful smash.

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

  • 9/10
  • EXTREMELY TACKY
  • LONG-LASTING TACKINESS

There is nothing wrong with the tackiness of the Yonex Hi-Soft. The tackiness performed great in our in-house tests and this was also backed up on the court too. We found the tackiness to be long-lasting, still performing well after several matches and training sessions. But, even so, round 1 to the Viper Dry.

Comfort

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

  • 9/10
  • GREAT COMFORT
  • SMOOTH AND SOFT
  • NOT STICKY
  • SLIGHTLY TOO THICK

Not only is the Dunlop Viper Dry incredibly tacky, but it too is comfy to hold. With a smooth, soft touch, it isn’t sticky either. We found that though the padding that gives the Viper Dry such good cushioning and shock absorption, it feels slightly on the too-thick side. Great for a powerful smash though!

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

  • 10/10
  • PERFECT PADDING
  • CUSHIONED FEEL
  • SHOCK ABSORBING

The Yonex Hi-Soft Grap is brilliantly cushioned for ultimate comfort. Even though the grip is padded, it doesn’t mean that the grip is too thick. This is why the Yonex Hi-Soft Grap scored a perfect score as it maintains a perfect balance between comfort and thickness making it great to hold without compromising on performance. Back level again!

Durability

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

  • 8/10
  • DURABLE
  • SACRIFICES SLIGHTLY FOR COMFORT

The durability of the Dunlop Viper Dry is great, allowing players to keep the same grip without having to resort to frequent changes thanks to its high durability. This is great for your pocket. However, it didn’t get a perfect score as we did see some abrasion on the grip after our tests, possibly due to the smooth and soft nature of the grip.

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

  • 9/10
  • DURABLE
  • LONG-LASTING
  • TACKY EVEN AFTER EXTENDED USE

Like all Yonex products, the Hi-Soft Grap reflects the brand’s quality and is well-made. We found that the Yonex Hi-Soft grip withstood the durability tests. Also, the durability of the grip has been put to the test in several matches and training sessions and passed with flying colors. The Yonex Hi-Soft just edges ahead.

Style

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

  • 2/10
  • POOR COLOR RANGE
  • 2 COLORS AVAILABLE
  • BLACK AND WHITE

If there is one reason that the Dunlop Viper Dry isn’t the best grip on the market, it lies in its style. It pales in comparison to the Raquex Enhance Grip and it was the worst of all the grips we tested. The Dunlop Viper Dry only comes in either Black or White, a clear indication that they have prioritized performance over style. While this might not appeal to those seeking vibrant color options, it caters well to players prioritizing performance.

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

  • 5/10
  • AVERAGE NUMBER COLORS
  • RANGE OF 6 COLORS
  • WHITE, BLACK, PINK, BLUE, YELLOW, AND RED

If there is one area where the Yonex Hi-Soft grip is underwhelming, it’s style. With only 6 colors available there is of course enough to choose from but scores very poorly. But even though the color selection isn’t great, it looks like a rainbow in comparison to the Dunlop VIper Dry.

Absorbency

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

  • 9/10
  • GREAT ABSORBENCY
  • TACKY EVEN WHEN WET
  • NO PROBLEM FOR SWEATY HANDS

The Dunlop Viper Dry performed exceptionally well in our absorbency test. It was only bested by the towel grips that are designed with absorbancy in mind. We observed that the tackiness of the grip was not lost even when wet thanks to the perforations on the surface which absorb moisture creating an ultra-dry feeling. Therefore, we found that the Viper Dry (it is in the name), can definitely be used even by those with sweaty hands.

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

  • 8/10
  • GREAT ABSORBENCY
  • TACKY EVEN WHEN WET
  • NO PROBLEM FOR SWEATY HANDS

In our absorbency test, we found that the Yonex Hi-Soft grip performed admirably. We observed that the tackiness of the grip was not lost even when wet. Though not as good as the towel grips or the Dunlop Viper Dry, we found that the Hi-Soft grips would perform perfectly well for the vast majority of players.

Ease of Regrip

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

  • 9/10
  • BEST IN CLASS
  • ADHESIVE BACKING
  • INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED
  • SPEED – 1 MIN 08 SEC

Regripping the Dunlop Viper was an easy process, featuring a pre-cut start position and finishing tape. Instructions were provided so great for beginners. In the speed test, it was lightning fast, coming in 1st out of the 9, an incredible 12 seconds faster than its closest rival and 24 seconds faster than the Yonex Hi-Soft Grap.

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

  • 7/10
  • ADHESIVE BACKING
  • NO INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED
  • SPEED – 1 MIN 32 SEC

Regripping the Yonex Hi-Soft Grap was an easy process, featuring a pre-cut start position and finishing tape. However, instructions were not provided for the individual grip we purchased and the end of the grip is not pre-cut, so can be tricky for beginners. In the speed test, it wasn’t particularly fast, coming in a joint 6th out of the 9 with its sibling, Yonex Super Grap, 24 seconds slower than its competitor, the Dunlop Viper Dry.

Price

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

  • 7/10
  • EXPENSIVE
  • HIGH BARRIER TO ENTRY

Though this grip is excellent in pretty much everything it does, this excellence does come at a price. Considerably more expensive than any other grips we tested, the Dunlop Viper Dry clocks in anywhere between ~£5.50 and ~£8.00, and then add shipping! Though you get amazing quality when purchasing the Dunlop Viper Dry, it’s not cheap.

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

  • 8/10
  • EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY
  • BULK BUY AVAILABLE
  • EXPENSIVE TO TEST

When it comes to the price and its value for money, the Yonex Hi-Soft Grap is amazing when buying in bulk. We found that you could purchase it for around ~£2.00 in bulk, which for what you get, is incredible. The only minor downside is that buying an individual grip to test out can be pricey. Individual grips can be bought for around ~£5.00 including shipping, a high barrier to entry.

Summary

Dunlop Viper Dry Grip

The Dunlop Viper Dry grip proves to be an exceptional choice for performance-oriented players. With its remarkable tackiness, top-notch comfort, and impressive absorbency, it stands out in critical areas. Despite excelling in functionality, it lacks style options and only offers two colors, prioritizing performance over aesthetics. Even with being relatively more expensive compared to the Karakal, the Dunlop Viper Dry justifies its price with high-quality construction and superior performance attributes. The added investment ensures a durable, reliable grip that maintains its performance over prolonged use. In summary, the Dunlop Viper Dry grip provides exceptional performance in Tackiness, Comfort, Absorbency, and Durability. However, although its quality is unquestionable, the grip’s relatively higher price may pose a challenge for budget-conscious buyers.

Is this your next grip?

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

Yonex’s Hi-Soft Grap is crafted with the player’s comfort at the forefront while maintaining a non-slip performance and excellent absorbency. With a perfect score for comfort, its brilliant padding and shock absorption strike a perfect balance between comfort and performance. The grip showcases impressive durability, reflecting Yonex’s quality craftsmanship, and maintaining its tackiness even after our in-house tests and on-court experience. However, it falls slightly short in terms of style variety, offering only a limited range of colors. In terms of value for money, purchasing in bulk provides great savings, yet individual grip prices might deter some testers due to the higher cost. In summary, the Yonex Hi-Soft PU Replacement grip provides exceptional comfort without sacrificing performance, making it the go-to grip for those players seeking additional comfort during play but who want to maintain a high level of competition.

The Winner

Yonex Hi-Soft Grap

Both grips score incredibly well in all of our tests and prove to be some of the best grips on the market. But, the Yonex Hi-Soft Grip edges the competition slightly thanks to the slightly better color range it has. Though low in comparison to other grips, because it goes toe-to-toe with the Dunlop Viper Dry, it is what helps swing it.

If you don’t care about what color your grip is and don’t mind just black or white, looking at the performance aspects, it’s clear the Dunlop Viper Dry Grip is as good as the Yonex Hi-Soft.

However, both are completely amazing grips and deciding to change your grip to either of these two grips will see a considerable improvement in your game, so why not give both a try and find out for yourself which one is the best?
